The institute, formerly known as the Polytechnic Institute, started operation in 1958 with the opening of three diploma courses: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It is one of the pioneer educational institutions in the entire north-eastern part of the country, from where the prestigious institutions such as Tripura Engineering College (now known as the National Institute of Technology, Agartala) and Women’s Polytechnic, Hapania, Tripura started their journey. The institute has been able to gain national name and reputation through more than six decades of excellence and illustrious journey, as a result of which the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (now MOE) Government of India has extended support from the World Bank under the Tech. The institute was upgraded to a degree-level institute in 2007 under the name Tripura Institute of Technology with UG courses in Engineering and Technology. TIT is a co-educational government institution under the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tripura offering five UG courses in Engineering and Technology, all approved by AICTE. Engineers are considered to be the backbone of the development of a state or country. Since its inception, TIT has been providing quality technical manpower to serve society in various capacities in Tripura, nationally and internationally. The institute is fully managed by the state government and therefore provides an opportunity to provide technical education to all sections of society at a very low cost. As a higher education destination, the institute has been instrumental in improving the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of the higher education sector in the state. Students at TIT take part in various extracurricular activities within and outside the Institute. Debate, extempore, dance, music, quiz etc. are few such events where they not only participate but also win many prizes. They participate in regional and national-level technical competitions like the North East Hackathon, Smart India Hackathon etc. to showcase their talent and skill. Students show keen interest in enrolling them in NCC program as well.
